The bean-to-bar scene: Artisan chocolate in Wellington
You might be surprised to learn that Wellington is home to some of the most delicious, innovative, and award-winning chocolate in New Zealand.
177 Main Street, Greytown, Wairarapa
A visit to Greytown would be incomplete without stopping by Schoc Chocolates.
Schoc’s chocologist Murray Langham has been creating and producing award-winning chocolate in a dizzying array of flavours since December 2002. In the more than two decades since, Schoc has picked up a number of awards, including Favourite Artisan Chocolate Company in the NZ Chocolate Awards.
Murray knows the benefits of consuming quality chocolate. The 60-plus flavours of Schoc are organic, where possible, sourced locally, and use only whole and real flavours. Some of them are quite intriguing. He encourages visitors to try before they buy. With many surprising themselves by falling headfirst for pink peppercorn, smokey almond milk, or Schoc’s best-selling lime and chilli chocolate. There is a chocolate for everyone, from the classic to the contemporary.
You can find Schoc in an adorable colonial cottage next to Cobblestones Museum. It offers a delicious array of treats and a unique experience. One of improving mental health through handcrafted, gourmet chocolate.
Murray’s background in clinical hypnotherapy, neuro-linguistic programming, and counselling aren’t the obvious path to becoming a chocolate shop owner. But anyone who’s ever enjoyed a block to get them through a tough time understands the healing and therapeutic nature of chocolate.
“We combine the joy of chocolate with a deeper understanding of one’s inner self,” says Murray, who has authored several books on using food as therapy.
