A local opera company is mounting an opera that is as dramatic as it is beautiful. ‘Tosca’ by Puccini is a story of love, violence, and the redemptive power of art. Wellington Opera has gathered a star-studded cast of New Zealand singers to bring the music to life.
Set in Rome in 1800 during the Napoleonic wars, the opera is a political thriller. Chief of Police Baron Scarpia lusts after Tosca but she is in love with Cavaradossi. He tries to manipulate Tosca into sleeping with him and tortures Cavaradossi into revealing the whereabouts of a political prisoner. The action takes place over less than 24 hours, making it an intense storytelling experience.
Orchestra Wellington will accompany the singers on Puccini’s luscious score. Its romantic themes promise a thrilling night out at an iconic Wellington venue, St James Theatre.
