An opera singer is on stage surrounded by an orchestra during a performance.

Opera houses worldwide are reverberating with the sound of New Zealand voices. This is partly due to the Lexus Song Quest. The bi-annual competition is back and, with $92,000 in prize money, it promises to be an exciting night for the young singers involved.

The Grand Final Gala at the Michael Fowler Centre challenges five singers to take to the stage with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. They must prove they are ready for the next step in their professional development.

Winning the Grand Final of the Lexus Song Quest opens the door for the singer to join previous winners like Kiri Te Kanawa who won in 1965. Other well-known winners include Jonathan Lemalu, Madeleine Pierard, and Amitai Pati. The 2024 International Head Judge is Grammy Award-winning South Korean soprano, Sumi Jo.
