Visting Tākina

Address: 50 Cable Street, Wellington.

Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre has three entrances.

  • The main Cable Street entrance — fully accessible, step-free access.
  • The smaller side Cable Street entrance — a small door, with steps leading into the building.
  • The Wakefield Street entrance — fully accessible, step-free access.

The nearest bus stops are on Courtenay Place and there is a taxi rank across the road at Te Papa.

Getting to the exhibition

Disney: The Magic of Animation is in the Tākina Exhibition Gallery on the ground floor, opposite the main escalator in the building.

Here, you will be greeted by staff who will scan your ticket either on your phone or a printed version. If you have a ticket, you can join the queue at the door to the entrance. You may have to queue for a short time, or you may be able to go straight inside.

If you are having trouble accessing your ticket online, the box office can help you find it or print your tickets out for you. More information on tickets is available below.

Visiting the exhibition

Here’s what to expect when visiting the exhibition at Tākina.

The exhibition opens at 10am and closes at 5pm, with last entry at 4pm.

Allow 45 to 60 minutes to enjoy the full exhibition.

Tickets

A general visit to Tākina is free and no booking is required. Visitors are welcome to explore the ground floor foyer space and visit Zephyr Café. The upper two levels of Tākina are not open to the public but can be booked for private events and conferences.

Accessibility

Tākina

  • Guide dogs and assistance animals are welcome in all areas of Tākina. 
  • One wheelchair is available for guests to use inside the exhibition. This needs to be pushed by someone other than the user.
  • The Tākina website has more accessibility information.

Inside the exhibition

  • An audio track of Disney songs plays throughout the exhibition. This will be turned to a lower volume for the relaxed sessions.
  • The exhibition floor is flat with no stairs or slopes.
  • The exhibition has low lighting. There are bright colours on the walls, some of which have patterns. There are TV monitors and projectors throughout the exhibition. Some of the TVs occasionally flash brightly during the videos.
  • Some areas have moving projections that cover the walls or flooring.

Sensory relaxed viewing sessions

Sensory relaxed viewing sessions allow you to explore the exhibition for 1.5 hours, with reduced light and sound stimulation.

Disney: The Magic of Animation features a variety of themed galleries with artworks from classic stories and films spanning 100 years of Walt Disney Animation Studios. The exhibition includes more than 600 art pieces up close, interactive art stations, and photo moments with different scenes and cut-out Disney characters. Merchandise shop

 As you exit the exhibition you will go through the merchandise shop. Remember to return your sketchpads at the silver gates before exiting.

The shop has a range of exhibition merchandise including ‘Pop! Vinyl’ figures, stationery, LEGO, costumes, jewellery, and posters.
