Chrystalls Bend Walkway is an easy track along the Ōtaki River. The path continues on from the Ōtaki River Trail, but you can also walk it on its own. It is suitable for all uses and is mainly a grass and gravel track through native bush.
The track has picnic seats spaced out at regular intervals, which are good spots to rest or enjoy the view of the river and the mountains.
Chrystalls Bend is next to a working quarry so expect to hear a bit of noise during the week towards the start of the trail. The track soon moves away from the noise, further into the bush and under the shade of tall trees.
Eventually, you’ll arrive at a picturesque footbridge with a lagoon and picnic seats to sit and enjoy lunch. The lagoon is home to ducklings and cygnets in the spring. If visiting later in the day you can watch the sky change colour at dusk, lighting up the Tararua mountains.
This track is suitable for all ages and abilities. Wheelchair access is limited, as you will need to use the quarry road onto the main track — this can be muddy and have areas of rough gravel. The rest of the path is relatively smooth and is great for off-road buggies.
Walkers, cyclists and horse riders can go all the way to Chrystalls Lagoon and back along the path. Horse riders must get the key to unlock the access gates from Kāpiti Coast District Council.
Don’t miss the local swimming hole by the rocks at the trailhead. It’s a popular jumping spot to cool off on a hot day.
