KNOW what to do on a rainy day
Don't let a rainy day stop you from enjoying our beautiful city. Check out some of our ideas below on what you can do next time it's raining...
- Spend the day browsing history at Te Papa. Must-see exhibitions include Whales Tohora - an exhibition showcasing the liftesyles and biology of the amazing mammals and Toi Te Papa Art of the Nation - showcasing the journey of NZ art over the years.
- The Film Archive has tons of documentaries, home movies, newsreels, television commercials, feature films and more – plenty to keep you entertained. You even get to watch it all in your own private theatre.
- Head to one of the many Wellington Cafes with a bunch of friends or a good book and enjoy a long lunch. Our best picks are Floridita’s, Fidels and Plum Café - all of which are on Cuba Street.
- Or head to Matterhorn or the Southern Cross for drinks (hot, cold or cocktails) and amuse yourself for hours with old-fashioned board games.
- Grab an umbrella and discover art in the city. Start at the City Gallery in Civic Square, then check out Popup Gallery on Ghuznee Street for that something different and Mary Newton Gallery on Vivian Street for funky exhibitions.
- Get your friends together and go bowling! The Lanes on Wakefield Street has a great atmosphere, pool tables, music, a restaurant and bar - tons of entertainment to keep you busy throughout the day.
- Spend the day pampering yourself - get a facial, massage, manicure, pedicure - the works! Try Is-Bliss Salon-Spa on Taranki Street or Urban Sanctuary on Plimmer Steps.
- Head to Borders on Lambton Quay and get lost for hours among all the books, magazines, dvds, music and coffee!
- Explore the amazing range of exhibitions about the sea and land around Wellington at The Museum of Wellington.
- Get active and rock climb at New Zealand’s largest indoor rock wall - only at Fergs Kayaks on Queens Wharf.
- Head to the Paramount Theatre and relax in their comfy seats while watching a movie and sipping a glass of wine or beer.
- Warm up with a chilli hot chocolate at Schoc Chocolaterie on Tory Street or a delicious chocolately hot chocolate at Scopa on Cuba Street (it comes topped with cream!)
